| Abilene Texas
Welcome to the City of Abilene Texas located in the beautiful Taylor County! Here on the "Friendly Frontier," Abilene preserves the traditional heritage of the Old West while providing all the advantages of a thriving, contemporary city.
Our community offers excellent schools, attractive and affordable housing, a regional airport, a historic downtown and a strong community spirit, as well as a wealth of tourism and recreational opportunities.
Abilene also has a long and proud military history. As the home of Dyess Air Force Base and its fleet of B-1 Bombers and C-130 transport planes, we are honored to continue our relationship with the military into the 21st Century.
The Grace Museum, housed in the restored 1909 Grace Hotel, has three museums under one roof: the Art Museum, the Children's Museum and the Historical Museum (focusing on Abilene history). A relatively new attraction is the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, which includes exhibits of work from William Joyce and other well-known children's book illustrators. About ten miles out of Abilene is Buffalo Gap Historic Village, made up of several hundred-year-old buildings representing the Old West. Find out more at the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council website.
Abilene's downtown revitalization efforts have received national praise from historic preservationists, housing & urban development specialists, state and federal downtown programs, economic development experts and locally, the proud citizens of Abilene.
As the business and financial core of the city, downtown boasts hundreds of private, public and non-profit organizations that employ thousands of people.
Numerous upscale shops, bars and restaurants dot the downtown map, meeting the retail demands of Abilenians every day.
Abilene has an active and successful downtown association. Organizations from all sectors of the downtown economy are linked together in a spirit of cooperation and self-promotion. The association helps plan numerous events throughout the year that entice Abilenians to visit downtown in even greater numbers than usual. When appropriate, the alliance has participated in lobbying efforts that help promote the interests and mission of downtown businesses.
A fun fact to know about Abilene is that we have one of the only competing and performing jump rope teams in the area, known as the "Jammin' Jumpers". They formed in 1996 and have been to the National Jump Rope Championships in Walt Disney World 3 times: in 2001, 2003, and 2005.
