Moving to or from Abilene Texas?

Here are some great tips and ideas when packing up and moving.

Gather all your supplies

Before you begin to pack, make sure you have all the necessary supplies ready to go so you don't have to run out at the last minute for more packing tape, sharpies or boxes. Gather about 10 more boxes than you think you will use.

Color code all the boxes

Put boxes for different rooms in different colored categories. Yellow for kitchen red for bathroom etc. This will help when it comes to unpacking and you will be able to tell immediatly where all the boxes go and can delegate to friends helping what colors go where.

Keep like items together

Keep bookends with books, light bulbs with lamps, and extension cords with appliances. Tape small loose items to the larger item it goes with. Bag in zipped bags, screws, nails or anything else that may go with a larger item. Duct tape will hold almost anything together so tape TV and electrical cords to the item they belong to or keep wayward cords together in one box marked for easy retrieval.

Pack Ahead

Anything that can be packed ahead of time should be. Carefully pack personally belongings especially if you are listing your house. Nick Nacks, collections and personal items should be carefully packed away for your new home.

Keep Valuables Safe.

  It's a good idea to keep valuables such as silverware, collections, or jewelry with you. If you have a long move and no room in your car, bury the items in a box titled "Miscellaneous". Check with your homeowner's insurance to see how you are covered during the move, or if you need to purchase extra. Also, find out what paperwork (receipts, appraisals, and photos) you might need to file a claim in case of loss.

Keep important documents with you.

No matter what it's a good idea to keep certain items with you throughout the move such as: birth certificates, school records, utility company numbers, recent bank records, current bills, phone lists, closing papers, realtor info, maps, and more.
